Reliever says he came back before he was ready

NEW YORK -- Mets reliever Grant Roberts admits that he pushed himself during his last stint on the disabled list.
Unfortunately for him, it appears that his hasty return will force him to miss even more time in his second trip to the DL this season.
Prior to the Mets' 7-6 loss to the Phillies in 12 innings Saturday, the team placed Roberts on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in his right shoulder. He missed time less than a month ago from June 13 thorugh June 30 with a right rotator cuff strain.
"I think (the Mets medical staff) is going to give me as much time as I need," Roberts said when asked if he will be able to return in two weeks. "They told me that even if everything feels good in 10 days that they are going to push me back. They want to make sure that when I come back that I can finish the rest of the year."
He added that this latest injury, which he referred to as bicep tendinitis that originates at the front of the shoulder, is slightly different from the pain that he experienced less than a month ago, which caused him pain in the back of the shoulder.
Manager Bobby Valentine said the 24-year-old right-hander was not rushed back to the Mets bullpen, but Roberts said that he may have been activated sooner than necessary by his own fault. He said that his arm felt fine when tossing in the outfield, but something was not right when he got on the mound.
"Nobody wants to get hurt," Roberts said. "I want to be out there like everybody else."
Valentine gave Roberts five days off between appearances, but it was evident that the rest did not help matters after his one-inning outing against the Phillies Friday night at Shea Stadium.
"We gave him five days off and he said he felt great," Valentine said. "He went out there and threw 15 pitches and felt less than great. We'll see if another two weeks helps him."
Roberts allowed a solo home run to Scott Rolen in the eighth inning of the Mets' 9-8 loss.
"(My arm) didn't feel very good in Florida (during a rehab stint), and, after five days off, it did not feel very good last night," Roberts said.
Roberts had been invaluable in his first full season in Valentine's bullpen. In 29 games, Roberts was 2-0 with a 2.09 ERA. He allowed nine earned runs on 37 hits and 15 walks in 38 2/3 innings pitched.
Roberts said that he has never had to deal with a pain like this in his young career. He said that he has dealt with tendinitis in the past, but the problem would generally subside within a couple of days.
Taking his place on the roster is right-hander Mark Corey, who was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk Friday, after being activated from the 15-day disabled list. Following the June 26 game against the Braves in New York, Corey suffered a seizure and later admitted to smoking marijuana prior to the seizure. He was placed on the DL the next day.
Corey, 27, pitched one scoreless inning of Saturday's game in his third stint in New York this season. He is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA, allowing one run on three hits and three walks in six appearances.
With the Tides, Corey was 3-1 with seven saves and a 1.03 ERA in 25 games.
THIS AND THAT
David Weathers said he could have pitched in Saturday's extra-inning affair despite having bruised his left ribs. Weathers said that he does not know how it happened, but it occured over the All-Star break. "I was just messing with my son," Weathers said. "Nothing major." ... Valentine said that Satoru Komiyama would probably be the leading candidate to replace either Shawn Estes or Jeff D'Amico in the starting rotation if they continue to struggle. D'Amico took the loss Friday night against the Phillies and Estes did not fair much better Saturday, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. ... Mike Piazza has 17 RBIs in his last 18 games. ... Jeromy Burnitz tied a season-high with three hits Saturday. He also had three hits May 3 at Houston.
