NEW YORK-- The Mets donned their 1986 uniforms as part of a promotional day for the second consecutive game on Tuesday. And for the second time in under 24 hours, they played like their World Champion predecessors, knocking off the Marlins, 10-5, at Shea Stadium.
The victory was the third in a row, the first time since June 19-21 that the Mets have had a winning streak that long. They will attempt to win their fourth straight game Wednesday in Montreal. New York has had only two winning streaks longer than three games this season, the last of which was a five-game stretch May 14-18. The Marlins, meanwhile, lost for the sixth consecutive game and seventh time in eight outings.
The Mets jumped on phenom-to-be Josh Beckett (2-4) quickly, racking up seven runs through the first three innings. Mo Vaughn got the party started in the first, launching his second titanic home run in as many days. This one was a 461-foot monster off the big scoreboard in right-center. It was his eighth homer in 19 games.
The second inning saw Timo Perez rocket a bases-loaded triple to right-center. The Mets went back to the long ball in the third with Edgardo Alfonzo lining a Beckett offering over the wall in the left-field corner to plate two more runs. Alfonzo added a two-run double in the seventh.
Meanwhile, Mets starter Al Leiter (9-7) was able to halt his losing streak against the Fish, topping Florida for the first time in four outings this season. Like Beckett, he got off to a shaky start, allowing a two-run homer to Derrek Lee in the second. Unlike Beckett, he was able to settle down almost immediately and limit the damage after the second inning.
Leiter wound up going six innings, scattering six hits, allowing four runs and striking out five before turning things over to the pen.
