CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Indians closer Bob Wickman went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained forearm muscle.

Wickman, who has been pitching with a sore elbow since spring training, never had been on the DL in his 10-year career.

The Indians said Wickman complained of a sore forearm after Sunday's loss in Kansas City and he was examined Monday at Lutheran Hospital.

Wickman is 0-3 with a 4.59 ERA and 20 saves in 35 appearances for Cleveland this season. He has blown two saves.

Right-hander Chad Paronto was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take Wickman's roster spot. Paronto appeared in 26 games with the Indians, going 0-2 with a 4.45 ERA before being sent to the minors July 15.

With Wickman sidelined, Indians interim manager Joel Skinner probably will use Paul Shuey to close games.

The 33-year-old Wickman went 5-0 with 32 saves in 70 games for the Indians last season. The club signed him to a three-year, $15.9 million contract in December.

Wickman said in June that he had been pitching with pain in his elbow since training camp in March.

Phillies' hurler Person goes on DL
PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Robert Person was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after complaining of pain in his elbow and shoulder.

Person, a 15-game winner last season, is 4-5 with a 5.44 ERA. He went just two innings Monday, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks in a 7-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Person, who can be a free agent after the season, is returning to Philadelphia from Chicago for an MRI.

Manager Larry Bowa said he planned to remove Person from the starting rotation, before finding out he was injured.

"I took him out of the game because he wasn't doing the job,'' Bowa said. "Two innings later, the trainer came down and said his shoulder and elbow were bothering him. That was the first we heard of it.''

In his last seven starts, Person was 2-3 with a 7.29 earned run average, walking 28 batters in 33 1/3 innings. Joe Roa, who was 14-0 with a 1.86 ERA at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, will take Person's spot in the rotation.

Rookie Brett Myers, the No. 12 pick in the 1999 draft, will take Person's roster spot. He replaced Terry Adams in the rotation and will start at Chicago on Wednesday.

Hitchcock has sharp, encouraging workout
TAMPA, Fla. -- Left-hander Sterling Hitchcock, out with a lower back injury, reported no problems after throwing 36 pitches in batting practice Tuesday at the Yankees' minor league complex.

Hitchcock said he will begin a rehabilitation assignment Thursday, pitching for New York's Gulf Coast League team.

Hitchcock went on the 15-day disabled list June 28. He started the season sidelined by back problems and went 1-0 with a 7.48 ERA in nine games after returning May 8.
