NEW YORK (AP) -- Al Leiter agreed Tuesday to an $18 million, two-year extension with the New York Mets rather than test an uncertain free-agent market in an offseason threatened with another work stoppage.
Leiter will get $8 million in each of the next two seasons, and the sides have a $10 million mutual option for 2005 with a $2 million buyout.
The 36-year-old left-hander, the ace of the Mets' staff, is 9-8 with a 3.28 ERA in 21 starts this season. He was acquired by New York from Florida after the 1997 season, traded as part of the Marlins' payroll purge following their World Series title.
His current $32 million, four-year deal, agreed to in October 1998, called for a $9 million signing bonus payable from October 1999 through this month, and salaries of $3 million in 1999, $5.5 million in 2000, $7.5 million in 2001 and $7 million this year,

Ok, I had to merge this thread into one thread instead of posting two similiar threads about Leiter. Please read carefully before post another new thread.

Not a problem. I had to merge them together since they may want to read AP story instead of deleting it.

Just for the record in defense of Floyd, I did tell him it was ok....One does not have to read every thread before he or she has to post....If you didnt read Julie's thread you would never know by her title that it was about Leiter signing....It only said that there was a press conference at 2pm.....
Floyds thread gave the details...No biggie if there were 2 threads...
Anyways, just wanted to make sure everyone was clear that he did ask me to merge as soon as he saw Julie's:)
Also, very glad that Leiter decided to re-sign....He is now and always a Met!!!

I love what he said.
"I can say that this will be the last uniform I wear as a Major League Baseball player. And that means a lot to me....... "
It wasn't only that he said it, because we've heard him say at other times that he'd like to retire as a Met, but to hear the emotion in his voice was very, very cool.
Ah. I can leave for Scotland knowing at least that this was taken care of.

There's a Skank fan at another board who's been ranting and raving about how the Skanks would get him in the off-season. And last year, when Al talked constantly about how much he loves being a Met and how much he wants to retire as a Met, Skank fans at a Skank board I lurked at were amazed that he could want to stay with a second-rate team.
Typical Skank mentality. If you're not dying to "don the pinstripes," you've got something wrong with you.

Well ...
Leiter, who's eligible for free agency in 2003, has told friends he'd jump at the chance to sign with the Yankees, and that he's finished negotiating with the Mets for now.
Its a little old but you get the picture.
I am glad he didnt JUMP to be a yankee
