CHICAGO -- Minnesota Twins starter Rick Reed could miss his scheduled start Sunday against the Blue Jays because of tenderness in his right index finger.
Reed worked five innings Monday in the Twins' 11-6 win over the White Sox. At one point while warming up between innings, he was shaking his hand in pain after throwing a curveball.
The trainer and manager Ron Gardenhire examined him, but let Reed continue his outing. If Reed can't go Sunday, Gardenhire said that left-hander Johan Santana would get a spot start in his place.
"If his hand starts feeling better, my preference would be to start Rick Reed in his normal spot," Gardenhire said. "If that doesn't look like it's going to work out, then it doesn't work out. We'll see. We're going to make sure he doesn't hurt himself and that it doesn't linger on the rest of the season."
Gardenhire said that decision on Reed's status will likely come after Thursday's off day. The 36-year-old veteran is 8-5 with a 4.60 ERA in 21 starts. He's been hampered with varied injuries this season like a sore neck and a pitching thumb cut on his suitcase.
