CLEVELAND -- Paul Shuey was traded back into a pennant race when the Cleveland Indians sent the reliever to the Los Angeles Dodgers for three pitchers on Sunday.

The Indians received left-hander Terry Mulholland and minor-league right-handers Ricardo Rodriguez and Francisco Cruceta.

"I'm excited,'' said Shuey, who pitched in the four postseasons with the Indians. "But I'm as big an Indians fan as there is. Right now, I am on the edge of breaking down and being giddy. It is a funny day.''

Shuey has been one of the AL's most dominant setup relievers despite making 11 trips to the disabled list since joining the Indians in 1994.

The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.41 ERA in 39 appearances this season despite a trip to the DL in June with a strained left groin.

He has a career record of 34-21 in 361 games, and he's 1-1 in 16 postseason appearances. His most impressive playoff stint came in the 1998 AL Championship Series, when he pitched 6 1-3 scoreless innings in five games against the New York Yankees.

"When I weighed the other offers for Shuey, I felt this deal, by far, was the best possible for the Cleveland Indians,'' general manager Mark Shapiro said.

The Dodgers, who entered Sunday four games behind first-place Arizona in the NL West, hoped to pair Shuey with closer Eric Gagne.

Los Angeles entered the day leading the NL wild-card race and could make further moves before the July 31 deadline.

So could the rebuilding Indians. The defending AL Central champions traded All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar to the Mets in the offseason and recently dealt pitchers Bartolo Colon and Chuck Finley to other NL playoff contenders.

"My heart has been ripped out, it really has,'' Shuey said of the Indians' struggles this season.

It was Dodgers' second deal with Cleveland this month. Los Angeles acquired utilityman Jolbert Cabrera in exchange for a minor-league pitcher.

Mulholland, 39, is 0-0 with a 7.31 ERA this season with the Dodgers and is 112-125 overall in 17 years in the majors.

The 24-year-old Rodriguez has split the 2002 season between Double-A Jacksonville , where he was 5-4 with a 1.99 ERA, and Triple-A Las Vegas (1-0, 3.86 ERA).

Cruceta, 21, was 8-4 with a 2.80 ERA at South Georgia of the Single-A South Atlantic League.

The Indians also called up right-hander Jason Beverlin from Triple-A Buffalo to take Shuey's roster spot before Sunday's game against Detroit
