MILWAUKEE (AP) - Milwaukee Brewers pitching coach Dave Stewart quit Monday, citing personal reasons.

The 45-year-old Stewart was in his first season as the Brewers pitching instructor.

``We're sorry to see Dave leave the organization, but we respect his wishes and wish him well in the future,'' Brewers general manager Dean Taylor said.

The Brewers did not give a reason why Stewart quit.

Bill Castro, Milwaukee's bullpen coach since 1991, will take over as pitching coach for the remainder of the season, Taylor said.

His mother has battled illness for much of the year, and Stewart is preparing to close on a house this week and move her near his home in San Diego. General manager Dean Taylor said Stewart had been talking seriously about a break for two or three days, but was not aware of a decision until Monday morning.

"After sitting around and really evaluating the things that are important -- or should be important -- most of those things I've bypassed for better than half of my adult life," Stewart said. "I just woke up one day and decided to do something different."
