MONTREAL -- If Tim Raines indeed calls it quits after this season, he has a future in coaching.
Marlins manager Jeff Torborg said Raines would best be suited on a team's bench as an instructor or positional coach.
"I think he would make a heck of a coach," Torborg said.
In fact, when Torborg took over as manager of the Expos last season, he talked to Raines about coaching then. But the 42-year-old outfielder said he wanted to keep playing.

"The thing about Tim is he is so well liked," Torborg said. "He's so personable. He can laugh at himself. He's so nice that everybody loves him."
With 20 years playing under his belt, Raines certainly has a wealth of baseball savvy. A number of Marlins players lean on the veteran for batting tips.
Unofficially, Raines says, this will be his last season. He hasn't made any announcement. The Marlins are using him primarily as a switch-hitter.
"I think he could be very good," All-Star third baseman Mike Lowell said. "He teaches patience. He could teach right-handed and left-handed hitters. I think he brings a lot to the table."
Raines, 9-for-43 as a pinch hitter, has 2,599 career hits.
"He's played so many years, and he has a track record, too," Lowell said. "I don't think you have to be a player to be a coach. But to open the door, and give that good first impression, if you played, people listen to you. Then players are going to realize if you know what you're talking about or not."
