View Full Version : Cutting dead wood

Recently I cut Jeff Weaver and Travis Driskill. After that horrible 7 run, 11 hit performance in 3 innings Mussina had I benched him and got three closers. I figure when all is said and done unless a pitcher has a 2 start week I can rack up more points with closers. I got Cordero(again), Kolb, and Marte. With my usual closers Sasaki and Guardado and the two starters I kept in the lineup, Paul Byrd and Rodrigo Lopez I shouldn't do too badly.
I find that I cheer for the guy in last place in my league and he has actually won 4 in a row. Next week should be a cake walk because apparently the guy I play gave up on his team, dropped Ventura, Higginson and Pierzynski and just picked up players who are in the minors or on the DL. Weird, but I'll take the victory.

I started out 7-1 but then my pitchers faltered and barring a miracle this weekend I'll end up 11-7 and in third. That's why I'm trying the closer route.

kozman,
I'm a "CLOSER HOG" myself and I play in a league thats head2head, but scoring is based on roto style.
Out of the 6 pitcher I am allowed to start, 4 to 5 of them are closers. There are times when I don't do well in wins or strikeouts, but I dominate in saves, era, and WHIP. I have Mussina & Weaver on that same team and rarely use them. Weaver will be dropped with the move to the bullpen.
If your pitcher is making one start a week and not pitching well, you are better off using a closer who might make 4 appearences during that same span.

My thoughts exactly. Chance are I could racked up more points with a closer than with a starter who makes only one appearance during the week.

I was pretty good in w l and saves. But not this week it seems everyone is losing and getting a high era. last week my pitching wemt 9-0 , 6 saves with a 3.70 era. the only stat I lost was holds. I had none so I had to get some hold guys and I did this week I have 3 holds but my pitching is 5-4 5 saves 5.46 era well actually make that 5-5 since Moris lost today andmy era will probably go up. This week I must say has been a HORRIBLE week.
I like my closers:
Benitez, Armando
Koch, Billy
Acevedo, Juan
Gagne, Eric
then the ones for my holds:
Rhodes, Arthur
Looper, Braden
Dotel, Octavio
Starting pitching is:
Burkett, John
Washburn, Jarrod
Reed, Rick
Morris, Matt
Finley, Chuck
Ortiz, Ramon
Rueter, Kirk
Martinez, Pedro

Sounds like you just had a bad week. You have a decent staff with holds and closers. I had Rhodes but he never did much until I let him go which figures. Oh well.

-KoZ well I got Dotel with a trade this week and the other I just picked up and dropped Wakefield. Before this week i was lucky if i had one hold. yeah a really bad week! my hitters arent hitting either i hate seeing 0-5, 0-4 lol. I have a .198 ba.

I am usually heavy on relievers as well...
In my cbs league we have 7 pitchers that can play in a week and I start 3 starters and 4 relievers (Guardado, Gagne, Izzy and Susaki, plus I have Percival and Julio on my bench.....) My starters are always Moose, Morris and now R. Lopez (I had Kile) and this is a formula that gives me the 2nd best record in the league at 11-6.....
In Yahoo, I always try to work it out where I have at least 2 great closers and try to get a 3rd....

That's one drawback of being in an AL only league. No closers like Gagne or Hoffman. I haven't given up on this season but with the looming strike possibility, who knows if we'll play a whole season.
I did get Cliff Floyd so he should help me out next week and if I get a few wins and a few saves I should be set.

Lucky for me I have Sasaki and Guardado but I'd much rather have someone like Smoltz. Oh well. I'm lucky to have who I do. I know next season I might try an AL-NL league, but it is kind of nice picking up good players like Floyd who switch leagues.
