Steve Phillips is not done dealing he says and he wants outfield and pitching help still. I hope we get a better outfielder to help bring some power to this club. "MS.CLEO"

Phillips Searches the Waiver Wire NY Times

After making two trades before the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline, Mets General Manager Steve Phillips has begun searching the waiver wire for players to claim and seeing which ones clear and can then be traded. Players who were placed on waivers Tuesday, prior to the trade deadline, would have cleared yesterday.

"There are lots of players on other teams that we like that we may put claims on even if we don't think teams are going to trade them," said Phillips, who did not disclose whether he had claimed any players.

Because he surrendered Jay Payton to the Rockies in a trade to acquire starting pitcher John Thomson, the Mets would appear to need help in the outfield. Mark Little, acquired from Colorado with Thomson, is the backup center fielder to Timo Perez. Phillips said his search was "not exclusive to the outfield," and defended trading Payton, one of the Mets' better hitters over the past month.

"We all like Jay Payton, as a person and a player, but he wasn't going to be the difference for us getting to the postseason," Phillips said. "We need our horses to get us there, and I think our pitching will have a more pivotal role in where we go down the stretch. We'll consider what the possibilities are in the outfield, but I don't feel desperate to have to acquire an outfielder."

Hot wire: General manager Steve Phillips said the team has begun monitoring the waiver wires with a mind to make more deals. The Mets seem to most be lacking in outfield depth, having traded Jay Payton in the deal that brought John Thompson and Mark Little from the Rockies. But Phillips didn't say the outfield was the only priority.

"It's not exclusively to the outfield," he said of the team's focus. "We all liked Jay Payton as a player but he wasn't going to be the difference between us getting to the playoffs. Our horses will be the difference. Pitching will be more pivotal."

Could Phillips be working on something that would bring another starting pitcher to the club? "There are lot of players out there that we like," he said.
