Linebacker Jamir Miller, who is out for the season after tearing his right Achilles' tendon in Cleveland's preseason opener, was placed on the injured reserve list by the Browns on Monday.
Miller, the Browns' top defensive player last season, got hurt on a running play during the first quarter Saturday night as the Browns beat the Minnesota Vikings 27-15.
He underwent surgery on Monday and will need 5-to-6 months to make a full recovery.
Miller made the Pro Bowl in 2001 after tying for the AFC lead with 13 sacks while helping the Browns lead the league in takeaways (42) and interceptions (33).
Browns coach Butch Davis will spend this week trying new combinations on defense to replace the 28-year-old Miller. The club signed Darren Hambrick to a one-year deal on Sunday as a possible solution.
Expectations this season were as high for Miller as they are for the Browns.
"On the bus, he was clearly disappointed," said Davis, who spoke to Miller, one of his four team captains following Saturday's game. "He made the Pro Bowl last year and he wanted to go back. He really felt bad and you can imagine how crushed he was."
Davis said doctors told him there could have been "four or five reasons" Miller got hurt but the injury was not caused by the Metrodome's artificial turf.
"It would have happened just as easily on grass as Astroturf,'' Davis said.
The Browns also placed rookie fullback Ben Miller on the reserve military list. Miller began his two-year commitment to the Air Force on Monday.
In Saturday's win, Miller caught one pass for 16 yards.
Cleveland added another wide receiver, signing free agent Abram Booty, the younger brother of Josh Booty, Cleveland's No. 3 quarterback.
Booty caught 19 passes for 342 yards last season for Valdosta State, a Division II program, after transferring from LSU.
Booty was helping coach his local high school team when the Browns called.
