Blue Jays put Delgado on DL

The undermanned Blue Jays, determining they'd better have somebody on the bench for their six-game trip to Oakland and Texas, placed ailing Carlos Delgado on the disabled list yesterday and purchased the contract of first baseman/outfielder Brian Lesher.

Delgado, whose franchise record iron man streak of 432 straight games came to end last Sunday, has missed seven of eight since and decided things weren't quite right even after contributing a couple of hits out of the DH spot Thursday. He's been taking all manner of treatment for stiffness in his lower back and left side.

"It looked like one of those things that could be two days on, two days off,'' said manager Carlos Tosca. "We just want him to get 100 per cent healthy.''

The 31-year-old Lesher, who has hit .240 in 225 at-bats over four brief stints in the majors, was 2for16 in a short stay with the Jays after breaking camp with the team, but was hitting .262 with seven homers and 28 RBIs for Syracuse. He'll join the Jays in Oakland.
