Mets acquire Gonzalez, Bevis
By Kevin T. Czerwinski / MLB.com

The Mets made a pair of minor moves on Tuesday, acquiring outfielder Raul Gonzalez from Cincinnati and right-hander P.J. Bevis from Arizona. Gonzalez is one of the two players to be named later in the Aug. 15 trade that sent Shawn Estes to the Reds. Bevis is the player to be named later in the Aug. 16 deal that sent Mark Little to Arizona.
Gonzalez hit .261 (6-for-23) with an RBI in 10 games after the Reds purchased his contract from their Triple-A affiliate in Louisville on July 11. While at Louisville, he hit .333 with 13 homers, 69 RBIs and 27 doubles in 114 games. He was named to the International League All-Star team and was leading the league in on-base percentage (.416) at the time of his recall.

He was the International League Player of the Month for May and led the league with 161 hits last year. Gonzalez, 28, also saw action in 11 games with Cincinnati last year, batting .214. He is essentially a career minor leaguer, beginning his career in 1991 in the Kansas City organization. He has appeared in 24 Major League games, including three with the Cubs in 2000.

The Reds have until Oct. 15 to send one more player to New York to complete the deal. The Mets also acquired minor league left-handed pitcher Pedro Feliciano and minor league outfielder Elvin Andujar in exchange for Estes and cash.

Bevis, 22, was a non-drafted free agent who was 4-5 with 11 saves in 49 games for Double-A El Paso of the Texas League. Right-handers are hitting .212 (33-for-156) this season. He will report to Double-A Binghamton of the Eastern League.

The Australian native represented his country at the 34th Baseball World Cup in Taiwan last year collecting a save and pitching three scoreless innings in four games. He has a 17-17 record with 25 saves in 111 minor league games since 1998.
