WHITE, COOK, ZEILE COULD BE ON THE MOVE
-----------------------------------------
Rick White and Dennis Cook are two of the strongest possibilities. White is making $1.15 million, while Cook is at $2.2 million. Both could help a contender and bring back a prospect or two. Both don't have deals for next year, which makes a trade easier.
The Mets wouldn't mind trading Zeile. In June, Zeile picked it up with a .302 average, three homers and 13 RBIs, which probably hurt his chances of staying at Shea. The Mets would be willing to shed his $6 million-plus salary for next season.
"I could get traded," the 35-year-old Zeile said. "I don't want to. I wish I could remain apprised of the situation, but I know that's not the way baseball works."
Zeile's been dealt as a hired gun twice, in '96 to Baltimore and in '98 to Texas. With a year on his contract, the Mets are going to have difficulties finding a partner for him.
A little more than a month ago, Armando Benitez went through his one tough stretch of the season, losing three games. Benitez was convinced he was going to be dealt. In reality, the only new team Benitez will likely play for this year is the NL All-Star team. Bobby Valentine is expected to select Benitez tomorrow.
Still, Benitez needed an injection of confidence. Over cards one day at Shea, Lenny Harris told Benitez not to worry about being traded. Harris told Benitez how good he was and told him you can't worry about what the front office is doing.
"Just go out and do your job," Harris said.
"You have to be ready for everything," said Benitez, who was surprised after the '98 season to be dealt by the Orioles.
