The left-hander scattered seven hits, becoming the first White Sox pitcher to win 17 games in nine seasons, as Chicago defeated Detroit 7-0 Sunday afternoon.
Chicago won its season-high fifth in a row. Detroit has lost four straight and seven in a row at home.
The last White Sox pitcher to win at least 17 games was Jack McDowell, who was 22-10 in 1993.
Buehrle (17-9) also became the first White Sox lefty to win at least 17 games since Britt Burns was 18-11 in 1985.
''He had his stuff working well for him today and he was hitting his spots,'' said Chicago manager Jerry Manuel.
It was the second shutout of the season and fourth career shutout for Buehrle, who struck out four and didn't walk a batter. It was also his fourth complete game of the season.
''I threw my sinker more today,'' said Buehrle. ''Kind of went away from the game plan that I've been doing all year with my cutter. My sinker was working so good that I stuck with it.''
Mark Redman (8-13) took the loss. He allowed five runs on 10 hits in six-plus innings.
''I fell behind a lot of hitters and the sinking fastball was sinking so much that I couldn't get a handle on it,'' he said.
The White Sox went up 1-0 in the second inning when Josh Paul's grounder drove in Carlos Lee from third base.
The Tigers threatened in the fourth after singles by Carlos Pena and Wendell Magee started the inning. Chris Truby sacrificed, and Buehrle got a pair of groundouts to escape.
''We can't get going with the bat,'' said Detroit manager Luis Pujols, who has seen his team score only eight runs in the last four games.
Chicago made it 2-0 in the fifth on Frank Thomas' RBI double into the left-field corner. D'Angelo Jimenez had singled and moved up on a bunt single by Aaron Rowand.
The White Sox stretched their lead to 3-0 in the sixth on Willie Harris' RBI single, then broke it open with three runs in the seventh on a RBI double by Paul Konerko and run-scoring singles by Lee and Joe Crede.
