September 11th: A National Holiday?

.c The Associated Press

(Sept. 1) - Americans are divided about whether Sept. 11 should be a national holiday like Veterans Day or Memorial Day, according to a new poll.

Support for a national holiday on the date that terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon outside Washington has slipped a bit since March, according to a CNN-Time poll released Sunday. While 44 percent favor the idea, 51 percent opposed it, down from a 48-48 split in March.

The telephone poll of 1,004 adults was conducted Wednesday and Thursday and has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The poll also found that:

A third said they feel less safe in public places, and slightly more said they feel less safe traveling since Sept. 11.

Almost a third said they are worried that a terrorist attack will occur on the anniversary of Sept. 11.

People were most likely to say an attack in the next 12 months would be carried out with a car or truck carrying a bomb or with biological or chemical weapons.

Two-thirds said the nation's intelligence gathering agencies failed in their responsibilities to obtain information about the attacks.

I think it should be a holiday in a remeberance of all of those who died. We have to make sure that no one ever forgets what happened nor the people who lost their lives because of it!!!

It won't be forgotten and making it a holiday doesn't solve anything. should we make a holiday whenever us people died? lets have Oaklahoma City bombings a holiday.... I think we should just have a holiday something like the day of the dead.

I agree with the sentiment, but we have to face harsh reality, too. People are going to forget. After WWI, people swore not to forget. I doubt many here would pass a quiz about WWI and Armistice Day is now Veterans Day. A nice gesture, but it's a signal that we've forgotten what the original day was intended for.

WWII? Same thing. Everyone involved swore to never forget. They didn't, everyone that came after did. Even a day of rememberance fades too fast. Again, all the post WWI and WWII celebrations/holidays have been removed, re-named or altered to make them three day weekends. Anybody notice when V-E Day is?

I fear making 911 a holiday will quickly become no more than a day off of work for far too many. Those that died deserve more than that.
