I wanna say Pedro.... but I'm guessing it's someone older..... Clemens is 39 but you wouldn't ask a question with him as the answer and create bad karma in your forum..... so I'll guess Randy Johnson who is 38:)

the correct answer is that both y'all were wrong...:)

it is Bob Caruthers who was 218-97

Hmmmm, from what source are you getting Bob Caruthers record from???
I have 2 sources that show his record at 218-99 which is a winning % of .688 which places him 3rd alltime after Whitey Ford and Dave Foutz whom have winning % of .690 and then Pedro who has a winning % of .691.......
Somewhere I have either 2 losses more than he had or you have him for 2 less losses....

Hmmm, even more intrigue to this mystery:confused:
I just went to a 3rd site (CNN SI)and THEY have his record even different from ours at 217-98 which still only gives him a winning % of .690, 2nd to Pedro....

my source was actually the 2001 ESPN Information Please Sports Almanac. They listed his record as 218-97 for a winning percentage of .692 just ahead of Pedro.... I have dropped my friend Rob Neyer a note to see if he can come up with anything.

Ok, cool Shawn, let me know what you find out...
My 2 other sources besides CNN SI were the Baseball Reference.com and the Baseball Almanac....
I guess because he played pre-1900's his #'s are sketchy.....

I remembered that Rob is on vacation... so i am not sure if he will be checking his email much or not...

I did find this though

http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/baseball/bol/ballplayers/C/Caruthers_Bob.html

it doesn't show his complete pitching record, but it does say that his WP was .692!!

the saddest part about his career though is that he will never be in the HOF because he only played 9 seasons.

I read that he logged an amazing 179 2/3 innings of postseason play during his career!

I was indeed looking for pedro but the is incredible about the number of innings that curuthers pitched post season some pitchers dont even get that many innings ina season..........nice work guys............
