Yankees reduce magic number to 10 with second win
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- The Yankees didn't quite have their A-team in for the second game of their doubleheader against the Orioles, but it didn't seem to faze Jeff Weaver. The right-hander dominated Baltimore, and the Yankees finished off the doubleheader sweep with a 3-1 win Tuesday night.
Weaver hurled eight innings of one-run ball, dropping the Yankees' magic number to clinch the American League East Division title to 10.

Regulars Derek Jeter, Alfonso Soriano, Jason Giambi, Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada were not in the lineup, as manager Joe Torre decided to give them a game off after playing in the day game. New York won the afternoon game, 5-2.

The Orioles struck first, when Chris Richard doubled Jay Gibbons home in the second inning to give Baltimore a 1-0 lead.

John Vander Wal led off the third inning with a single, moving to third on Juan Rivera's double. With Enrique Wilson at the plate and one out, Orioles starter Sidney Ponson's pitch got by catcher Brook Fordyce, and Vander Wal broke for the plate.

Fordyce's throw to Ponson at home beat Vander Wal as Ponson applied the tag. But home plate umpire Laz Diaz called Vander Wal safe, tying the score at 1.

Raul Mondesi, who went 3-for-3 in the first game of the doubleheader, launched a solo home run, his 26th, into the left-field seats to put the Yankees on top for the first time in the game.

After allowing the run in the second, Weaver got into a rhythm and made quick work of the Orioles. He retired 17 of the next 18 batters, with Fordyce's fifth-inning single accounting for Baltimore's lone baserunner from the third through the seventh.

New York added a run in the bottom of the seventh, as Rivera singled in Nick Johnson. It was Rivera's third hit of the doubleheader and his third RBI.

Ponson (7-6) threw a solid game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over eight innings. He struck out five, tossing his second complete game of the year.

Weaver (9-11) went eight innings, allowing one run on four hits. He did not walk a batter, extending the Yankees' streak of consecutive innings without a walk to 58. He struck out five.

Steve Karsay pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save of the season. New York's bullpen is 12-for-12 in save situations since Mariano Rivera went on the disabled list in mid-August.

The Yankees and Orioles play the third game of their four-game series on Thursday, as Orlando Hernandez takes on John Stephens.
