40-7. That's 40 Penn State points to 7 Nebraska points for those who couldn't figure it out. :D
Wow ... what a game. I don't know where to begin. I guess it would be best to go in chronological order.
That atmosphere was un-f'in believable. It was an AMAZING atmosphere to be a part of. I can't put it into words. Of all the games I've been to, the ONLY game with a more raucous crowd was when Adam Taliaferro walked onto the field last year against Miami. That was the absolute best atmosphere I've been in; the one last night was second.
Flat out, Penn State was dominant. Or Nebraska sucked. Most likely, a combination of both.
Nebraska couldn't stop anything. Or Penn State couldn't fail at anything. NU did everything wrong, PSU did everything right.
General Mills showed the nation how great of a QB he really is. He sure did display his talents well. I tell ya what, before he's done at PSU he will be contending for a Heisman trophy. What did Mills do wrong last night??
Larry Johnson showed Paterno why he should stick with one back instead of three like he did last year. Johnson ran for over 120 yards. Granted, most of those yards were when PSU was melting the clock. Nevertheless, 120 yards against a defense that's typically so good (which they're not now) is impressive. Especially considering he averaged nearly 7 yards a pop.
Bryant Johnson ... talk about one of the most underrated receivers in the nation. He constantly beat Groce, who is a darn good CB. Nearly 20 yards a catch is pretty damn good. He's going to have a great season. Defenses know he's the WR to key in on and they still can't stop him. He has the talent to be a mid second round pick at best. But hell, let's worry about that after the season is over, which should be after New Year's Day.
The offensive line did a great job. Mills was seldom under pressure.
Now .. the defense. Where to begin.
All four defensive lineman, as usual, played a great game. Arguably the best defensive line in the nation. Off hand, I can't think of any better defensive lines. Kennedy, Adams, and Haynes are all studs.
The linebackers did an OK job. None really stood out. No. #17 had a good game though, I don't know his name.
The secondary did a good job as well. Gardner's INT returned for 6 was huge. It put the game away. Lowry also made some good plays.
And the kicking game. Kimball boomed 6 kickoffs into the endzone, Gould had a nice kick that set NU up at the 15 plus two field goals, and Royer had a nice punt pinning NU on the one.
All in all, not a whole lot PSU didn't do, and there's not a whole lot NU did do, except stink up the joint. The only bad thing was traffic. I left at 5:00 and it took me until 7:30 to get a parking spot. Usually it takes me an hour and a half to get into the stadium from the time I leave my house.
Just imagine how bad the game could have been if the officials were unbiased. They missed a blatant holding call, a blatant late hit on Mills, a blatant offsides call, and a blatant pass interference call. Haynes also had a fumble return for a TD brought back.
I knew Nebraska was overrated. I thought they were ranked way too high beginning the season, I tried to convince awfullespellare (to no avail) NU was overrated and had a lot of problems, but I NEVER, EVER, expected PSU to win by 33 points. I thought 17 at the most, most likely 24-10 or something.
One fan sitting across from me was pretty darn funny. I sit behind the visiting team's fan section, so it can get quite tense at times. NU fans were talking for at least 30 minutes before kickoff. So this guy says "I hear North Texas Tech has an open week next season, maybe y'all can schedule them!". Then they were giving the halftime scores, and he says "With one minute left to go in the first half, Nebraska 14, Southern ... Oh wait a minute, NU's playing a real team today! What in the hell was the athletic director thinking?" Maybe the atmosphere got the best of me, but I found that to be quite funny.
Lastly, I'll close on these words: WE ARE ....... PENN STATE! WE ARE ........ PENN STATE! WE ARE ......... PENN STATE! I think that's enough for now. I'm going to enjoy this victory for a long time. Hell, I'm as excited now as I was last night. In case you can't tell, I'm bubbling with enthusiasm. 40-7. Wow.
