ATLANTA, Sept. 17 -- The Atlanta Hawks have signed free agent forward Darvin Ham to a contract, it was announced today by VP/General Manager Pete Babcock. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Darvin’s a player we’ve always had interest in, because of his high-energy and competitive toughness,” said Babcock, “and we are looking forward to bringing those elements, in addition to his basketball abilities to our franchise.”

Ham’s arrival in Atlanta will reunite the 6-7 forward with a couple of familiar faces from his days in Milwaukee – recently acquired All-Star Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson and assistant coach Terry Stotts. In three seasons with the Bucks he averaged 4.4 points and 3.7 rebounds in 134 games, while shooting 54.9-percent from the field.

Last season, Ham’s toughness and durability enabled him to play in a career-high 1,208 minutes of action, and in 70 games, he recorded 4.3 ppg and 2.9 rpg. After five NBA seasons, he has career numbers of 3.4 points and 2.8 rebounds, in addition to making 54.4-percent of his field goal attempts.

Never drafted by an NBA franchise, Ham played for the Florida Sharks in the United States Basketball League (USBL) in 1996, before the Denver Nuggets signed him as a free agent on October 1, 1996. After splitting time that season (36 games) with the Nuggets and the Indiana Pacers, he spent one season (1997-98) with the Washington Wizards and one year overseas playing for Coviran-C.Alhambra in the Spanish League (1998-99) prior to joining the Bucks.

Ham, 29, began his collegiate career at Otero Junior College and following one season, transferred to Texas Tech where he averaged 8.1 points and 5.1 rebounds.

aww, Ham was one of the few Bucks players that played hard every game :(. of course, he could only hit a shot within a one-foot radius of the basket, but he was a hustler! Sad to see him go :(

gee, i dunno :umm. i've never heard of a player's season recorded in total minutes; usually only games or minutes per game. all i know is that Ham didn't play a lot at all. he was a hard-working, hustling, energetic beyond his mind, bench player :D. i liked him :(

hell yeah he was a Buck! he wasn't a star, but he was okay...he'd dive for loose balls and grab a couple rebounds whenever he was in the game :D. i called him "The Energizer":)

gee, now both him and Glenn will be Hawks next season

i don't miss him that much :). i know there will be times during the season that bucks fans will curse that trade to death, but i think it will help Milwaukee in the long run. Watch Ray Allen have a break out season :2guns:
