Assuming the Halos don't totally collapse and the A's hang on...what's the rotation for the ALDS?

Over the last three years, our pitchers stats against Anaheim:

Clemens: none
Pettitte: 2-0; 3.00 ERA; 15.0 IP; 14 hits; 5 ER; 1 HR; 2 BB; 11 K; OPP BA .237
El Duque: 1-1; 5.59 ERA; 19.1 IP; 21 hits; 12 ER; 2 HR; 7 BB; 15 K; OPP BA .280
Wells: 1-0; 6.52 ERA; 9.2 IP; 14 hits; 7 ER; 2 HR; 2 BB; 3 K; OPP BA .350
Mussina: none
Weaver: 2-2; 1.95 ERA; 37.0 IP; 27 hits; 8 ER; 1 HR; 7 BB; 34 K; OPP BA .197

My guess would be:
Gm 1: Pettitte
Gm 2: Clemens
Gm 3: Wells
Gm 4: Mussina
Gm 5: Pettitte
with Weaver as the emergency starter (being he OWNS the Angels)

thoughts?

Clemens is starting in the first game. They said so lastnight during the game.

seriously?

that doesn't make much sense to me. Clemens has been pitching the worst out of all our pitchers recently (except, maybe El Duque, who has two straight not too good games). Pettitte has been the post-all star game Ace, Moose has been the best September pitcher, and Wells has been the best pitcher all year. i guess Torre's relying on Clemen's experience (but on the other hand, they all have experience except for Weaver...). So Clemens will be pitching Game 5 too? (or are we going with a 5-man rotation?)

No way they go to a 5 man rotation in the playoffs....

Clemens would get the game 5 start (if needed) barring injury or a total collapse in game 1...

Last year the Yanks started with Clemens, Pettite, Moose and then El Duque....

Interesting to see how Torres juggles this years rotation after Clemens....

Your right James. No 5 man rotation, El Duque to the bullpen and Clemens starts game 1. at least that's what what they were saying lastnight and for the last couple of games.
My guess:
Clemens
Pettitte
Boomer
Moose.

I'm sure the rotation will be out soon!

Starting Clemens in Game 1 and 5 is risky. out of all our starters, he's been the most inconsistent. I'd give it to Pettitte (he really deserves it) but they don't care what i think :(

ALDS rotation set (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/5760051)

GAME 1: Clemens
GAME 2: Pettitte
GAME 3: Moose
GAME 4: Boomer
GAME 5: Clemens

interesting Boomer is 4th...even though he was our best pitcher all season...and has the best post-season resumes of all the starters other than El Duque...

Clemens is a six time Cy Young winner and has the best record against the Angels of any of the starting pitchers. If you go back to the last time the Angels were in the playoffs, you'll see that Clemens destroyed them. IMO Even if he didn't have the record he has against them, He's still the Ace and deserves to pitch the first game. Boomer is probably pitching 4th because he doesn't have the playoff experience that the other three has, plus if you have to force a game 5, It's a pretty good thing to have Boomer sitting in that 4th place in the rotation.

Yeah, i guess so. although i kinda thought that Torre would reward Boomer for having the season he's had by starting him in the three slot, but Moose's deserving too with the September he's having (and by what he did last year in Game 3).

gotta hope Clemens shows up for Game 1 though...recently he's been hit hard early in the game

his ALDS record as a yankee does scare me a little too...
1999: 1-0 with an ERA of 0.00
2000: 0-2 with an ERA of 8.18
2001: 0-1 with an ERA of 5.40

but i guess you can't really go wrong with the rotation. all of them are big-game pitchers :D (and that includes our longman, Mr. El Duque :2guns: )

LoL...The last time Clemens started vs the Angels in the playoffs he was like 23 years old and he really didnt pitch that great vs them as he wa 1-1 with a 4.37 era....That IMO should not be taken into account now, some 16 years later....Rocket has a good playoff history with a 3.33 era and he is considered the "ACE" I would think of the staff...A sure HOF'er....
My thinking with Boomer being #4 is not so much to reward or punish him but rather to give Torre the Righty/Lefty punch....The way the rotation is now set he has a righty, lefty, righty, lefty thru-out the series.....That was probably his thinking....
Boomer also has more playoff experience than one may think...In fact he has more playoff experience than Moose and El Duque....
He has been in 19 postseason games in his career.....Clemens has been in 21, Pettite in 24....

Clemens' post-season success is only relatively recent. He'd had some pretty awful outings in the playoffs. And, considering his age, and how his performance this season has not been consistent, starting him first could be dicey.

However, since he's done much better at home than away, giving him games 1 and 5, both in the Bronx, is probably part of Torre's thinking.

go angels!
