BALTIMORE -- After spending a difficult season rehabilitating his right arm, Scott Erickson has set his sights on beginning the next season as the ace of the Baltimore Orioles' staff.
"I'm looking forward to pitching on opening day next year. That's my goal," Erickson said Tuesday. "When April 1 rolls around next year, I hope to walk to the mound pitching for the Orioles."
Erickson had ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow last Aug. 8. During spring training, he expressed the desire to return this year, but instead spent the entire 2001 season working his arm into shape.
"The last few weeks I threw about 100 pitches twice a week," he said. "I've had good arm strength and durability. There's no question about my elbow; it's all a matter of velocity."
Erickson spent four months working in the Orioles' minor league complex in Sarasota, Fla. It wasn't exactly the highlight of his career, but it beat the alternative.
"I was glad to be down there doing rehab as opposed to sitting on the bench watching everybody play while I couldn't," he said.
He hopes to pitch batting practice in the next week or two, yet another step in his bid to return to form.
"I'm disappointed to miss the whole year, but I did what's good for my arm," he said. "I'm hoping I can come back like so many others, throwing harder. Then it would be worth it. I'm looking at the positive side, thinking how much better I can be down the road."<
Notes:@ Orioles SS Mike Bordick underwent season-ending shoulder surgery Tuesday in Alabama. Bordick had a torn labrum repaired by Dr. James Andrews. Bordick already figured to miss the remainder of the season, but the procedure formally ended hope he had of returning. Bordick has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 14. He hit .249 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 58 games.
