MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Freshman reserve Josh Allen ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns, helping Maryland use a 28-point first quarter to beat West Virginia 48-17 Saturday.
Maryland (4-2) had five touchdown plays of more than 20 yards, including four in the first quarter. The 28 points were the most in a quarter for the Terrapins since they scored 29 in the opening quarter against Duke in 1982.
Allen became the first Maryland freshman since 1998 to top 100 yards. He broke three tackles on a 70-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter and had a 1-yard TD run midway through the second quarter for a 35-0 lead.
West Virginia (3-2) was held to its lowest yardage total of the season - 324 - and has given up points in bunches in both of its losses. Wisconsin scored 27 in the second quarter of a 34-17 victory over the Mountaineers on Sept. 7.
A week after setting a Big East record with 536 yards rushing against East Carolina, the nation's No. 2 offense didn't push Maryland around consistently.
The bright spot for West Virginia? Avon Cobourne ran 30 times for 123 yards, setting a school record with his 22nd 100-yard game.
Terrapins quarterback Scott McBrien wasn't effective after the first quarter in his return to Mountaineer Field against his former team. Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen banned interviews this week with the junior, who transferred from West Virginia two years ago.
McBrien opened the scoring with a 21-yard TD run and threw a 45-yard scoring pass to Jafar Williams late in the first quarter.
He finished 8-of-18 for 162 yards with a fumble.
West Virginia's Rasheed Marshall was 12-of-24 for 105 yards with two interceptions.
I'm probably the only person who cares about this game, but I'm pretty damn excited! Some of my friends knew Josh Allen in High School, and I also saw him play in HS. It's so exciting to see our future producing so well now, especially with Bruce Perry out possibly for the season. This will give us some much-needed momentum going into ACC play, which begins Thursday night, Oct. 17, vs. Georgia Tech on ESPN.
