Sox ask to interview Minaya
By Ian Browne / MLB.com
BOSTON -- A week ago, the Red Sox announced they were formally starting their search to fill the general manager position, which has been served on an interim basis by Mike Port since Feb. 28. Expos GM Omar Minaya confirmed to MLB.com on Tuesday that the Red Sox had requested permission to speak with him.
"They asked for permission and I'm waiting to speak with [Red Sox president/CEO Larry] Lucchino," said Minaya. "We're playing phone tag."
Minaya said that no interview had been set up as of yet, and he didn't wish to elaborate anymore on the Boston opportunity until he spoke with Lucchino.
After spending four years as an assistant GM for the Mets, Minaya got his first opportunity to be a GM last season, when the Expos' ownership was taken over by Major League Baseball. The Dominican Republic native was named Expos GM on Feb. 12.
Minaya, long respected for his ability as a talent evaluator, hit the ground running in his first season with the Expos.
When the team played surprisingly well the first three months of the season, Minaya dealt Lee Stevens and three prospects to the Indians for ace Bartolo Colon. He also acquired Cliff Floyd from the Marlins during the All-Star break.
Unfortunately for the Expos, those moves didn't translate into a playoff appearance. A rough July sent the Expos spiraling out of contention before finishing with a respectable 83-79 record. Minaya dealt Floyd to the Red Sox for a package of prospects July 30.
There remains obvious limbo with the situation in Montreal, as the future location and ownership of the team has yet to be solidified.
As for the Red Sox, Lucchino said last week he had requested permission from two clubs to speak with GM candidates.
On Monday, Lucchino said that "there were no new developments over the weekend ... we continue to do due diligence on several possibilities."
One of those possibilities, it appears, is Minaya.
Pole also tabbed: Minaya isn't the only member of the Expos family potentially leaving. Pitching coach Dick Pole is scheduled to meet with the Phillies to replace the fired Vern Ruhle. And former Expos pitching coach Joe Kerrigan interviewed for the position on Monday.
