Jacob Cruz, who completed a medical rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Colorado Springs, was designated for assignment Friday, giving the Rockies 10 days to dispose of his contract. They could trade him, release him or, if Cruz clears waivers, send him outright to Colorado Springs.
Cruz, acquired from Cleveland on June 2 for minor league catcher Josh Bard and outfielder Jody Gerut, hit .213 with five RBI in 30 games for the Rockies before going on the disabled list because of a strained hamstring July 17. He hit .382 with 13 RBI at Colorado Springs but also struck out 17 times in 55 at-bats.
