The yanks should resign Tino for 3 years and put him at dh/1b and then trade justice or put justice in left field. Have Tino be a guide for Nick Johnson in teaching defense and such. With donnies bat guidence and tinos defense to guide nick johnson, he can learn a lot and improve.
we resign hitchcock for 2 or 3 years then:
we could package justice, lily (or keisler), erick almonte, and wohlers for a quantrill/stewart/and a prospect kind of package package. if the yanks want to add more power they can go after jose cruz jr. intead of stewart but, stewart seems easier to get at the moment. or just leave justice playing at left and spencer in right and hope that works out.
if we make these moves, we will have a solid rotation (clemens, pettitte, mussina, el duque, hitchcock (starts during the season becomes a relief pitcher in the playoffs).(this lets our younger pitchers like graman grow in the minors), an improved bullpen, improves the batting situation, we dont pay justice the last yr. of his contract, tino stays and teaches nick johnson and if johnson struggles we have an automatic replacement whether its defense or offense or both.
we could sign a big name of like a bonds for the OF and have spencer be a great bench player. we try to get back glenalan hill or someone like that for pinch hitting power.
the line up: jeter, stewart, bernie, tino, posada, spencer, soriano, nick johnson, 3b replacement. if soriano bats in the 2 spot then: jeter, soriano, stewart, bernie, tino, posada, spencer, 3b replacement.
i dont have an idea of how to solve the 3b problem though. maybe give brosius a nice contract for 1 year. then bring up henson after that year and hope he had gotten enough at-bats and experience. those are my thoughts (and they are a lot). lata...
