Talk at the GM meetings is that the Sox have made inquiries about Montreal's Bartolo Colon and Oakland's Cory Lidle and Ted Lilly, hoping one of them becomes available via trade.

Most teams are in a salary-dumping mode, though the market is slow going at the moment.

The Sox are dangling catcher Mark Johnson, whose offensive struggles haven't changed in his major-league career but now is signed through next season to a new $500,000 contract.

The Sox may go with Miguel Olivo as their starting catcher, hoping his game-calling skills catch up with his offensive skills.

Most teams are trying to pry Borchard and minor-league pitcher Kris Honel from the Sox, though both are considered untouchable. There hasn't been much talk about free agent Frank Thomas, whose window of opportunity ends Dec. 7.
