PHILADELPHIA -- Donovan McNabb could miss the rest of the regular season after breaking his right ankle Sunday in the Philadelphia Eagles' 38-14 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Though McNabb wasn't officially ruled out of next Monday night's game at San Francisco, Eagles coach Andy Reid said the star quarterback could miss six-to-eight weeks, "if everything goes right.''

The NFC East-leading Eagles (7-3) play their final game on Dec. 28.

McNabb, who's had never had a serious injury in his four-year career, insisted he would try to play against the 49ers. He has made 53 consecutive starts, including the playoffs.

"In my mind, I'll be out there,'' he said.

The Eagles' medical staff disagreed.

"It's not something he can play with right now,'' said trainer Rick Burkholder. "We'll know more in the next 24-to-48 hours.''

Koy Detmer probably will start in McNabb's place.

McNabb was hurt on the third play of the game, when he was sacked by Arizona's Adrian Wilson and LeVar Woods. McNabb fumbled and stayed on the turf, clutching his right leg, but he returned on his team's next possession and led the Eagles to the win, even though he limped throughout the game.

The injury was first thought to be a sprain, but X-rays after the game showed the break.

For the first time in career, McNabb had no rushing attempts, but he stayed in the pocket and completed 20 of 25 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns to tie his career high.

McNabb finally came out with 4:49 left, since the game was in hand.

Talk about screwed.

McNabb is the center of that team...I highly doubt Koy Detmer taking the Eagles anywhere but to the golf course earlier than expected...

How tough is McNabb to play on a broken ankle for 50:00 and have an 80% completion rate?

I can't imagine how painful that must have been.

I think Detmer will go 2-4. At 9-7 overall, the Eagles should make the playoffs. Their defense is so good, the offense could score two touchdowns and still win.

What a horrible week for QB's. Poor McNabb. What a warrior.

I have severely sprained my ankles a number of times. You usually go numb about ten minutes after the injury, and the real pain does not kick in until you wake up the next morning. I've played full games of organized street hockey after twisting my ankle early in the game, although I can't imagine playing with a break. Christ that must have hurt!!

Koy Detmer is still around?
