KOA announced Monday that Wayne Hagin is leaving the station to join the St. Louis Cardinals' broadcasts on KMOX. The Cardinals and KMOX will formally announce Hagin's hiring today in St. Louis. He will receive a three-year contract with a fourth-year option to fill the job that became vacant this summer with the death of legendary Cardinals announcer Jack Buck.
With the Cardinals, Hagin will share the radio booth with Mike Shannon, a former St. Louis third baseman who just completed his 31st season as a team broadcaster.
"If this had been any other team, I would not have gone," Hagin said. "I had great respect for Jack Buck. You can never replace Jack Buck. I hope I honor his past work with my future work."
Hagin, 46, came to the Rockies in 1993 after having worked on radio broadcasts with the Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants and Cardinals. He has broadcast all 1,457 regular-season games in Rockies history.
Wayne is no Jack Buck, but I think he's a very knowledgable baseball announcer who doesn't get in the way of the game. Fans in the huge KMOX area are getting a good broadcaster. He has matured quite a bit in his ten seasons with the Rockies.
