The Rockies acquired Bennett from the New York Mets on Thursday for a player to be determined. Bennett will join the team in Milwaukee and get an opportunity to prove he can be part of the answer to the questions surrounding the Rockies' catching situation.
Bennett, who signed with the Phillies as an 11th-round draft choice in 1990, was upset he didn't get more of an opportunity to play, and was traded to the Mets on July 23. He had a pinch-hit single for the Mets the next day, but a week later was sent to Class AAA Norfolk, where he has hit .299 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 20 games.
Bennett hit .306 at Class AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre last year with 12 home runs and 52 RBI in 47 games.
He has a .249 big-league average, but has appeared in only 110 games with 286 at-bats in slightly more than two years of big-league service time, including all of 1999 when he played in 36 games and hit .273 with the Phillies.
Left-handed reliever Todd Belitz, who had not appeared in a game since his Aug. 18 call-up, was sent back to Class AAA Colorado Springs to make room for Bennett.
