HOUSTON -- Houston Astros right fielder Richard Hidalgo is recovering after being shot in the left forearm during a carjacking in Venezuela.

The Houston Chronicle reported Friday that the 27-year-old player will arrive in Houston on Sunday for tests with team doctors.

The shooting happened Thursday, and Hidalgo was reported to be resting at his home in Valencia, Venezuela.

The Chronicle quotee people who've spoken with Hidalgo as saying he suffered a muscle wound that did not damage tendons or ligaments. He has feeling in his left hand and use of his hand and his arm.

Hidalgo spent the final six weeks of the season on the disabled list or injured and unable to play because of a hip strain.

Doggie's friend and fellow baseball player Endy Chavez said, "Thank God it was his left arm." ... Hopefully this is just a slight injury (hard to imagine any bullet wound as "slight") and Hidalgo won't sit around recuping and get even fatter than he was last season.

According to the latest report, Hidalgo's injury is not as slight as first hoped or thought ... Astros say he suffered a "...gunshot wound approximately nine millimeters in length in his left forearm. In addition to nerve and muscle damage, Hidalgo has numbness in his middle and ring fingers."

Doesn't sound too good right now.

On the Astrosline show last night, GM Gerry Hunsicker said Doggie is improving and might avoid having further surgery on his left arm ... Some recent nerve and circulatory tests were okey dokey, the numbness in his fingers is better and Hidalgo will probably stick around Houston for a few more weeks before they determine if he'll need more surgery or can get back to his regular workout.
