i used to be afraid of the dark and had to sleep with the lights on...... i was afraid when it got too quiet and would think a burglar would break in...... sometimes my bro would tease me and get me thinking that someone was under the bed, it used to freak me out! i also went through a phase where i was afraid of basements (anyone see Amytiville Horror?? that basement!! Eeek!!)

oh, and i was afraid of the ocean after seeing JAWS!

I was afraid of Guy Smiley on Sesame Street... but I think that is all i was really afraid of. (Maybe he was from the Electric Company.... can't remember, really)

OMG Cyn, I still wont go in the ocean because of Jaws!!! I was afraid of losing everybody I loved after my Dad died when I was four.
Strangest thing is, when I was little, I had no fear of the dark, but now I have a serious fear of the dark. My psychic says it's from a past life.

I was afraid of the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz and that one day I was going to wake up from what I thought was a dream and really find myself at school wearing just my underwear.

My abuelito also wound me up with stories about all sorts of renegade people and animals out in the country ... So when I spent the summer at his ranch, I would constantly be getting up at night when the dogs started barking or branches from the trees started scraping across the tin roof ... Knowing he always carried a gun with him and having been treed by a javelina one time, both of those things only cemented some of my fears in place.

And finally, metal crutches and leg braces were the absolute worst ... You know the crutches, the ones with the "arm holes" instead of the type that rest up under your pits ... Back in the 50s, you still saw a lot of people, kids included, who had suffered through polio and were forever crippled ... I never knew why they scared me, but God knows they did.

I could see someone at a carnival or store or just on the street, and I would turn and run as fast as I could both anywhere and nowhere in particular ... When they opened up this brand new and, for then at least, huge store down in Corpus Christi, it was like a huge event for all of South Texas ... Think the name was Lichenstein's, or something like that ... Our family drove up all the way from McAllen to meet my grandparents and see this wonderful big place ... I was supposed to go with my Mamaw and Papaw while all my little sisters were with my parents that day ... I must have been about 8.

I'm holding my Papaw's hand and we turned the aisle right in the path of this man with leg braces and those darn crutches ... I bolted, racing through the aisles, back and forth, before eventually getting to an exit ... Right out the door and straight to the parking lot, spending the next little bit hiding between cars and looking for my dad's old Ford ... I get to it and climb in ... Sitting in the car next to ours is this old man who was waiting for his wife inside shopping ... He sees me crying, asks me what the problem is, I tell him I just got lost and am waiting for my parents at the car ... He turns real grandfatherly with me, and I wind up climbing in his car and basically falling asleep nestled against him.

After going through the whole store, announcing my name on the PA, waiting at lost and found, all of that jazz, my parents finally walk out to the huge parking lot on the whim that I somehow managed to remember where we parked and went to the car ... There I am sleeping in this stranger's car, and that's sort of the end of the story ... I'm still shaken when I see leg braces and metal crutches.

I'd go with fear of the dark. i had a light on when i went to sleep. not a big light, just something to not make it pitch black.

I used to be scared of the dark. I had a scobby doo night light when I was little, but hen his nose broke off.

I was afraid of the cemetery. My oldest brother told me that the dead people woke up at night and looked for food.

Then you'd better stay away from my office. I often walk around with a frog on my head.

Hmmm, I was probably most afraid of my father, for it seemed as though he was always looking for an excuse to beat my @ss. It was difficult, too, because he could be such a fun-loving, laid-back guy -- unless you pissed him off. Did you leave crumbs on the table? Did you accidentally slip and say "damn"? Did you leave your glove at the baseball field? I remember being very scared of this man as a young kid. Unfortunately, the "law" for that day was all dependent upon my father's mood. Was it a good day? What would set him off on a sunny weekend was much different than what would upset him after a long work day. I'm pretty sure I hated him for that.

But he's turned out to be an okay guy ;)
