SAN JOSE, Calif. (CP) — Former Washington and Anaheim coach Ron Wilson is set to take over the San Jose Sharks, according to published reports.
"There may be an announcement as early as (today), and probably no later than Thursday," a source told the San Francisco Chronicle.
The San Jose Mercury News also reported Wilson will take the job, barring a breakdown in negotiations.
Wilson, 46, would succeed Darryl Sutter, who was fired along with assistants Lorne Molleken and Rich Preston on Sunday.
He could make his debut Friday night when the Sharks play at home against Columbus.
A spokesperson said the Sharks interviewed one candidate Tuesday, and a league source indicated it was Wilson, the Chronicle reported.
Sharks GM Dean Lombardi, who was unavailable for comment Tuesday, said he was working from "a short list."
If negotiations didn't go well with Wilson, the Sharks were believed to be interested in Herb Brooks, architect of the 1980 Miracle on Ice team and currently Pittsburgh's director of player development.
Larry Robinson, the former Kings and Devils coach, told a source he's not interested in coaching, the Chronicle said.
Wilson was fired in Washington last May after his fifth season with the Capitals ended without making the playoffs.
Previously, Wilson led Washington to back-to-back division titles, three 40-win seasons and a trip to the 1998 Stanley Cup final, in which Detroit swept the Caps during Wilson's first year behind the bench.
Wilson, who began his coaching career with Vancouver as an assistant, 1990-93, got his first head coaching job with Anaheim in 1993-94.
Wilson was born in Windsor, Ont., and raised in Riverside, R.I. He appeared in 177 games as a player with Toronto and the Minnesota North Stars, scoring 26 goals and 93 points.
