Padres sign RHP Nagy to minor league deal

SportsTicker

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - Righthander Charles Nagy, who has won just eight games over the last three years due to a series of arm problems, on Friday signed a one-year minor league contract with the San Diego Padres and invited him to spring training.

Nagy, 35, joins the Padres after spending the first 13 years of his career with the Cleveland Indians. He posted a 129-113 record in 297 starts with the Indians and ranks among the all-time franchise leaders in wins, strikeouts and starts.

From 1995-1999, Nagy was one of the most consistent starters in the major leaguers, joining Atlanta's Greg Maddux as the only pitchers to win at least 15 games each season. During that five-year span, Nagy won 80 games.

But in 2000, Nagy experienced injuries for the first time since 1993 and went just 2-7 with an 8.11 ERA in 11 starts for the Indians. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow on May 19 and made only three starts for the Indians the remainder of the season.

Nagy also struggled in 2001 due to continued elbow problems and went 5-6 with a 6.40 ERA in 13 starts. Last season, he was limited to 11 starts, posting a 1-4 record and 8.88 ERA.
