Needing Infield Help, Giants Sign Perez to Two-Year Deal
.c The Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO (Dec. 22) -- Former Gold Glove infielder Neifi Perez signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
The Giants claimed Perez off waivers from the Kansas City Royals last month.
Perez, a shortstop who also can play second base or third, gives the Giants some versatility in their new infield that no longer has David Bell at third or former NL MVP Jeff Kent at second. Kent signed with the Houston Astros on Wednesday.
Perez hit .236 with 37 RBI in 2002. Kansas City acquired Perez, the 2000 NL Gold Glove winner at shortstop for Colorado, during the 2001 season in a three-team trade.
"Neifi is an accomplished major league middle infielder who can hit for average, run well and play on either side of second base,'' Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "Like a lot of the players we've signed this winter, he'll provide (manager) Felipe (Alou) with a lot of versatility. Neifi has the advantage of being a switch hitter and can steal a base when called upon. He adds depth to our infield on any given day.''
