Padres Agree to Terms With Bennett on One-Year Deal
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free-agent catcher Gary Bennett, who spent last season with the Colorado Rockies.
Bennett, 30, batted .265 with four home runs and 26 RBI in 90 games last year. His .992 fielding percentage was ninth-best among National League catchers.
In seven seasons with Philadelphia, the New York Mets and Colorado, Bennett has a .259 average with nine homers and 66 RBI.
San Diego also designated infielder Kevin Eberwein for assignment. Eberwein hit .204 with 12 homers and 36 RBI in 92 minor league games last season.
