Wh is Yao Ming on this poll? He hasn't even played half a year. Anyway, I voted Hakeem, blocks shots, scores points with that famous jump shot of his. Too bad he sucked it up in TO.

uj4l
12-26-2002, 04:28 PM
i put ming as a joke. buti voted for shaq because he is dominating so much and will get even better because he is still young.

renuszm
12-26-2002, 04:36 PM
Shaq isn't young, he is a little over 30 now, and he already said he would retire soon.

uj4l
12-26-2002, 04:40 PM
i think he is 30...wait lemme check....yup he is 30...he has a couple of more years,

renuszm
12-26-2002, 04:44 PM
yeah, 30 isn't exactly young, and its about the time when you start to decline, and like I said, Shaw said he will retire soon.

here is a comparison for career stats:

POINTS
Shaq: 27.6
Hakeem: 21.8

BLOCKS
Shaq: 2.62
Hakeem: 3.09

REBOUNDS
Shaq: 12.20
Hakeem: 11.10

ASSISTS
Shaq: 2.8
Hakeem: 2.5

TURNOVERS
Shaq: 2.88
Hakeem: 2.96

FIELD GOAL %
Shaq: .557
Hakeem: .512

Shaq wins 5-1

renuszm
12-26-2002, 04:54 PM
Yeah, I bet those stats are including Hakeen when he played his last years in Houston and Toronto, he was what...40? Shaq is 30 and will decline as well.
And most of the category's are pretty close.

rockin500
12-26-2002, 05:17 PM
i still went with shaq. despite his FT lack of prowess

uj4l
12-26-2002, 06:37 PM
was hakeem good at free throws? i know shaq aint the best but he is getting way better

renuszm
12-26-2002, 09:14 PM
Anyways, I dont know if anyone saw the 1994 NBA finals ( didin't) but Hakeem badly outplayed Shaq (who was playing with the Magic)

uj4l
12-26-2002, 09:21 PM
shq was still young with the magic

renuszm
12-26-2002, 09:22 PM
What is your point though? Hakeem was once young and he still did well.

uj4l
12-26-2002, 09:27 PM
so...u dont judge players when they were young....u judge them by when they were in their prime. DUH!!!

renuszm
12-26-2002, 09:31 PM
Yao Ming is young, and we are judging him in this thread, since about all of the votes that are made are going to wose going to be the best in the future, I might as well change my vote to him and convert to the Walton religion./

uj4l
12-26-2002, 09:33 PM
i put Ming Yao as a joke. i dont think anyone was going to vote for him. i think that shaq is better than hakeem NOW. as i said opinions are like @$$holes everyone has one

renuszm
12-26-2002, 09:34 PM
I'm changing my vote to Yao Ming, he has changed the game :D

rockin500
12-26-2002, 09:36 PM
yes, you have to judge players when they are young too. especailly with his talent, shaq should be judged pretty hard when young.

uj4l
12-26-2002, 09:37 PM
i wouldnt say he was the best when he was young. but yes he was still good

renuszm
12-26-2002, 09:38 PM
Hakeem is still better IMO.

uj4l
12-26-2002, 09:40 PM
and Shaq is still better IMO

renuszm
12-26-2002, 09:49 PM
I was just looking at stats in their prime years. Let's say their 7th year in the league.
Points: Shaq 26.3
Hakeem 21.2
Blocks: Shaq 1.67
Hakeem 2.9
Rebounds: Shaq 10.70
Hakeem 13.80
Assists: Shaq 2.3
Hakeem 2.3
Turnovers: Shaq 2.49
Hakeem 3.1
Much more close this time.

uj4l
12-26-2002, 09:52 PM
ok..but u know how u said shaq said he will retire soon? and u know how hakeem will too? well they are both about to retire. so that means that u should look at their career stats

If Shaq played until Hakeem's age, he would likely slack of near the end like Hakeem did.

the world will never know:umm

renuszm
12-26-2002, 09:58 PM
It's common for players to decline near the end of their careers, look at MJ, he doesen't dominate like he used to.

uj4l
12-26-2002, 10:06 PM
yeaeh malone still averages 18.3. not bad for a 39 year old. hakeem is the same age as malone. and malone still averages that much. and hakeem averages 7.3(well last year)

renuszm
12-27-2002, 12:31 AM
That's a totally different position as well. Hakeem faces different defensive matchups every night.

uj4l
12-27-2002, 12:54 PM
yeah they are different positions but centers are supposed to score the most. besides what is wrong with hakeem? how bad is his injury? i think he should just retire

Nowadays i think gaurds score a TON more than Centers, for the most part!

rockin500
12-27-2002, 01:13 PM
a center is not supposed to score the most for your team. thats what your shooting guard is for. your center is supposed to score, block and rebound. :)

uj4l
12-27-2002, 01:23 PM
it probably just depends on the center. but when is hakeem coming back?

renuszm

Hakeem retired a month ago.
And yes, a center job is mainly to rebound, block shots and everything else that you can do when your 7'0 tall. Also Hakeem spent a lot of his last few years on the bench and not starting, which explains why he scored only 7 ppg

uj4l
12-27-2002, 08:09 PM
u sure he retired cause i thought he was only injured

renuszm
12-27-2002, 08:42 PM
Yeah, he retired when the Raptors played Houston.

uj4l
12-27-2002, 08:53 PM

if hakeem sucks, then most of the other centers in the league when he was at his prime musta REALLY sucked. lol

awefullspellare
12-29-2002, 03:59 PM
face it Hakeem would dominate the weaklings at cenyter nowadays when he was in his prime!!!!

Look at his numbers:
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/hakeem_olajuwon/
He had 13 years of over 20 ppg. 12 years of over 10 rebounds per game. 2 Years of over 4 blocks per game. Yeah, that's lil yrs right there.

uj4l
12-31-2002, 01:38 PM
shaq 11 years of 20 ppg, 11 years of rpg, 2 years 3 bpg and his career isnt over. and when i said "shaq 11 years of 20 ppg, 11 years of rpg" he has only been in the nba for 11 years

renuszm
12-31-2002, 01:49 PM
I realize that, and Hakeem's thirteen 20 ppg season's came in his first 13 season, so I guess we should wait another 3 years before this poll goes through :clap2:

uj4l
12-31-2002, 03:44 PM
lets just weait an see how long shaq will last

lol, this thread has been very amusing :clap2:

lal, do you know who Hakeem is? Maybe you know him as Akeem or something. Hakeem Olajuwan is one of the all-time greats, and had far more than just a "lil good years." He was as great as David Robinson and Patrick Ewing, both of whom made the 50-greatest players list and are first-ballot Hall-of-Famers, and arguably better. Unfortunately, like Ewing, his career stats are tainted with the low later years of thier career, when they were backup players at best.

BUT, i still haven't voted yet. Even though i am as Anti-Lakers as anyone, i have to admit that Shaq does have a legimate claim as the best Post-1980s center.

BTW, why the hell is Yao Ming on the poll? :umm is that supposed to be a joke or something?

uj4l
01-03-2003, 03:27 AM
man i was just kiddin

milky_way
01-03-2003, 05:33 PM
tough decision since i was still a confused grammar school student during Hakeem's best years, but i still voted for him. he's arguably the most complete center ever, and he played and succeeded against some of the greatest centers ever (Ewing, Robinson, Shaq) and BEAT them. Although Shaq is the most dominant center (and player for that matter) of today, and has been nearly unstoppable in the past three years, he has against him the fact that his best and most dominating years were years where there were really no other decent, let alone great, centers in the league. Also, Shaq doesn't seem to have the dedication that Hakeem had. Sometimes it seems as though Shaq plays hard only when he wants to (in simpler terms, he's lazy). Look at the situation in LA right now: Shaq spent his offseason thinking of clever degrading one-liners to deliver to the Kings instead of working out and dealing with his toe. look at the effect it has had on the Lakers.

lal4l
01-03-2003, 05:59 PM
Pretty true milkey but I still think Shaq is better:biggrinpa
