Blue Jays Sign Catalanotto, Plan to Use Him in Outfield

SportsTicker

TORONTO (Dec. 30) -- The Toronto Blue Jays on Monday signed free-agent outfielder Frank Catalanotto, who hit .330 in 2001 for the Texas Rangers, to a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 28-year-old Catalanotto is a career .296 hitter and also can play second base, but the Blue Jays plan to use him in the outfield.

The Rangers decided not to offer Catalanotto a contract for the 2003 season, making him a free agent. Texas signed outfielder Doug Glanville earlier in the month to a one-year contract.

Catalanotto played in just 68 games last season due to an assortment of injuries and hit .269 in 68 games with three home runs, 23 RBI and nine stolen bases.

The left-handed hitting Catalanotto ranked fifth in the American League with his .330 average in 2001 and also had 31 doubles, 11 home runs and 54 RBI.
