Wilmer "Vinegar Bend" Mizell was a hard-throwing left-hander who broke in with the Cardinals in 1952.

He received his nickname while playing in Class D baseball in 1949, it is said.He played with Hall of Fame members such as Enos Slaughter and Red Schoendienst. Ptched Game 3 against the New York Yankees in what many consider the most dramatic World Series ever. , but retired only one batter in his lone WS start in Game Three, surrendering five runs.
After military service in '54 and '55, Mizell resumed pitching for St. Louis; he was named to the All-Star team in 1959. In May, 1960, Mizell was traded to the Pirates, for Julian Javier and Ed Bauta. Mizell was 13-5 for Pittsburgh in 1960; with southpaw Harvey Haddix he complemented righthanders Bob Friend and Vernon Law in a formidable starting rotation. In spring '62, Mizell was traded to the Mets; their first year was his last in the majors. Mizell's career totals are 90 wins, including 15 shutouts, and 88 losses, with a 3.85 E.R.A. he died on Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at the age of 68.
