Fans weigh in on Hall debate
By Gregg Klayman / MLB.com

The final results are in, and although they didn't help the top finishers reach Cooperstown, they are an indication of whom the fans wanted to see in upstate New York on July 27 for Hall of Fame induction cermonies.

Eddie Murray was the No. 1 choice of MLB.com voters for election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Fifty-four percent of the 100,000-plus ballots cast contained the eight-time All-Star's name. Murray appeared on 85.3 percent of BBWAA (Baseball Writers' Association of America) ballots and is slated for enshrinement in Cooperstown.

Gary Carter, who will also find himself in upstate New York in late July, finished fifth in the fan balloting (28.5 percent). But the catcher was elected to the Hall in his sixth year of eligibility, the choice of 78 percent of BBWAA voters.

In order for a player to actually get elected to the Hall of Fame, he must obtain votes on at least 75 percent of ballots cast from the BBWAA. Approximately 500 members of the BBWAA voted for this year's class.

Nine-time Gold Glove winner Ryne Sandberg finished second in the fan voting, receiving votes on 42 percent of ballots. However, the former Cubs second baseman ranked sixth among BBWAA members, garnering mention on 49.2 percent of the ballots cast.

Yankee legend Don Mattingly (34.4 percent) held on for a third-place finish among MLB.com votes, placing ahead of the likes of Andre Dawson (28.9), Carter and Lee Smith (25.1). Jim Rice (20.6), Goose Gossage (16.8), Dale Murphy (14.8) and Tommy John (13.8) rounded out the top 10 finishers in the fan balloting.

Fans were able to begin voting for the 33 eligible candidates on Dec. 22. More than 400,000 votes for players were cast during the 2½-week period. Voters were able to select up to five players and were limited to one ballot per e-mail address.
