Royals sign IF Relaford to two-year contract

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - The Kansas City Royals added a versatile veteran Friday, signing infielder Desi Relaford to a two-year contract.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Making starts at five different positions for Seattle last season, Relaford batted .267 with six home runs and 43 RBI in 112 games. Primarily a shortstop, where he made 34 starts, Relaford opened 14 games in left field and four in right in addition to starts at second and third base.
Originally drafted by the Mariners, the 29-year-old Relaford began his career in 1996 with Philadelphia and spent time with San Diego and the New York Mets before being dealt to San Francisco after the 2001 season. Relaford never wore a Giants uniform as he was traded to Seattle for David Bell last January.
In 597 career games, Relaford owns a .248 average with 25 homers and 199 RBI. He is expected to provide insurance at shortstop for the Royals, who view 24-year-old Angel Berroa as their starter in 2003.
