Honorary All-Star Captains Named
NEW YORK (AP) -- Hall of Fame newcomer Kirby Puckett, along with Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca, will serve as honorary captains for the All-Star game at Safeco Field next month.
Puckett will be on the AL side. The former Minnesota outfielder was elected to the Hall last January and will be inducted at Cooperstown, N.Y., on Aug. 5.
Puckett played in 10 straight All-Star games and was MVP of the 1993 event in Baltimore.
Thomson and Branca will be NL co-captains for the game July 10 in Seattle. This season marks the 50th anniversary of ''The Shot Heard 'Round the World,'' the playoff home run Thomson hit off Branca to lift the New York Giants over the Brooklyn Dodgers for the 1951 NL pennant.
Branca and Thomson both were three-time NL All-Stars.
