Well, I was bored, and needed to change things up. Piazza seemed to be pretty popular (especially with the ladies:biggrin: )

Plus, I am sitting here waiting on the DISH network guy to show up with my PVR system. I am going to have fun with the digital recording of live TV! Can't wait.

So anyhow, you may see it change a bit if I come up with something that looks a little better. (Don't worry, Piazza will stay).

i have actually thought this for some time as well, but had not said anything. That would be a fine banner to have over at grandslamsingle... or even at nyfansonly... but this is not a met's forum....


as for piazza being more recognizable than most, i personally have to disagree... when i first saw it, i didn't even know who it was, only that he was wearing a met's uniform.

Please allow me to back up here. First, I couldn't have planned it any better to look like a total jerk. When I first posted this, I had no idea that Mike would be the hero of such a dramatic and emotionally charged game. You people in New York cannot possibly receive enough support and prayers, in any shape, form or fashion, imho. To cause anyone sadness in any way was not my intent, and for that I am deeply sorry, trublu22, and anyone else that I offended. It was in a very flippant manner that I linked to that particular pic, and I should have known that it was not appropriate.

If the intent is to get more baseball posters here, fans of 29 other teams will not see the beauty in having Piazza at the top of their team's board. If I'm a Phillie or Atlanta fan, I probably wouldn't even bother checking in. Those of us that know each other from other boards aren't concerned, but new posters might have issues with it. I realize that baseball is such a trivial thing right now, but the game will go on, and hopefully this site will grow. The great thing about baseball is that fans of different teams can get along and discuss the greatest game ever played.

I still agree. Piazza shouldn't be at the top of any forum but the Mets forum. It's not fair. Neither should there be posts about the Brooklyn Cyclones games in the "Dugout" forum. It's disrespectful to non-Mets fans.

I agree that Piazza should not be at the top of the forum also. I brought up much of what has already been said to Jesse a few days ago but I wasn't going to speak up about it unless someone else brought it up.

Maybe Chad or James could make that a neutral player to tie into the red and blue Addict Sports logo. Just make Piazza's jersey red or blue and I think that would be fine.

I agree with Bill about bringing people here. I know if I'm a Phillies fan and see a Mets fan moderating that forum it would make me think twice about coming back.

Ummm, the Piazza picture has been there for only 2 weeks and I really don't think him being on a banner will affect people coming over and posting...If you want to chat baseball who cares who is on top of the page....Besides it is only something new that Chad came up with because he was bored one night and he figured he was one of the more popular players (especially with the ladies)
The same banner appears on top of every page on this site....
And as far as being recognizeable I recognized him right away.....
Anyways, maybe we can find maybe another picture with a GROUP of players so no one is offended by having Piazza on there...But because I believe in the Karma, I hope no one has a problem with him staying up at top for just a little longer......I will put the original thread about this back up top so everyone can see what I'm talking about...

The contraversy I have created. Who woulda known?

Here is my thought process:

I had Todd Helton at the top - keep in mind that this site's parent site is "Addict Fantasy Sports" - Helton was a good and recognizable player last year because of his .400 average (as long as it lasted). He also had value as a fantasy player. He wasn't there because I live in Colorado.

Edgerrin James used to be at the top of my football forum, and Addict Fantasy Sports; Shaquile O'Neil on the basketball forum, and Patrick Roy on the Hockey forum. They were all picked for their 'popularity', 'recognizability' (if that is a word), and thier stats or 'fantasy value'. If Michael Jordan was still playing, you could count on his picture in the different areas - NOT because I want to only appeal to Chicago fans, but because he was popular in general.

Piazza is a recognizable & popular player, and has good fantasy value (at least I thought:hmm: ***Cheat sheets I made prior to the season opener (http://www.addictfantasysports.com/CheatSheets/MLB/c.htm) ). This made him a canidate to grace the pages of the baseball forum - along with a few others. His picture fit fairly well within the dimensions of the image I had to make, and for most glances, you can quickly identify that this is a 'baseball' forum by the picture (finding a picture is somewhat time consuming).

He was a 'canidate' for the above reasons. Now I had some extra things to add into the equation. We do have females posting to these boards. This is not to assume that Piazza is now a gimmick, but appealing to women helps to diversify the population that are posting - and he is a good looking guy (O.k., maybe there is a bit of value as a 'gimmick':ohno: ).

Now, raise you hand if you are FROM New York or are a New York sports fan. I can tell you right now that 78% of the people reading this forum are in this category (at least according to my demographical stats for my sports sites, and comparing them to sports sites in general). That is an EXTREMELY high percentage. It is less New Yorkers for football, but it is still very high. Now I know that not ALL New Yorkers are Mets fans. You can't please everyone.

Now do I want to show that this board supports the Mets and that it is dominated by mets fans? No. Not necessarily. But I think that the forum 'counts' will show that this is least 'partially' true as well.

Now, back to the actual picture. The picture shows no number, no 'ledgible' mets logo, and his name isn't even in view. Take a quick look at the picture. Does that represent baseball? Does it make you think 'baseball'? Or do you think it says "Hey, we are all Mets fans!"

If I showed it to my wife, and asked her what came to her mind first. She would say... "ooo uh huh baby, come to mama":love: NO... just kidding. She would say 'Baseball'. If I looked at it, I would think "baseball". I think that most people didn't even notice until it was brought to their attention that it was Piazza or even a Mets player.

I am not trying to 'portray' anything. All baseball fans are welcome here. I am sorry if a offends some of you in some way. Am I off base in thinking that some people are offended a little bit too easily? Or am I heartless pig that has no idea what is going on (Don't ask my wife 'this' one).:biggrin:

I am writing this to encourage more discussion, not to shun it.

Is it possible to have a different logo on each forum? If so, let me know the size specs etc. and I could possibly submit a few images, at least for the Pirates forum, others too if people are interested.

If you are into it, I think I am able to have different images for each forum.

The dimensions are 376x99 and It would have to 'flow with the rest of the page (mine has the blue curved) and it has to have Addict Sports as the most prominent lettering. It should have some sort of 'standardization' to allow people to know that they are still at the same site if they switch forums (ie. the 'Addict Sports' lettering is the same regardless of the image).

Oh, how I was hoping this post would just fade away. What started out as me making fun of myself for not noticing Mike up there has caused much grief.

I am not offended by his presence. He is actually a damn good player. And I also know that except for a few of us, most on this board are Mets fans. I wish that more of them would post here more often.

But to get a more diverse fan base, I guarantee that his presence at the top of the Phillie's and Brave's boards will hinder that. Baseball fans (not so much roto fans) can be very fickle. As trublu22 pointed out, a likeness of Chipper would be blasphamous in the Mets forum.

As Nutty said, perhaps a custom logo for each forum, or maybe a montage (sp?) of players. I could work on that as well.

Just a small suggestion: how's 'bout a few different players from a few different teams? (i.e. Piazza, Bernie Williams, Bonds, McGuire, Sosa, Helton, Pedro, ARod... etc...) Make them all small.

Oops! I may have spoken too soon. I haven't been able to find a special area to change the layout for individual forums. Hence, losing the ability to have separate images for each forum.

I may be able to code something special, but I will have to think about it.

I could also (possibly) work on a script to cycle graphics each day. (so each day you would see a random graphic)

Also, if you plan to make graphics to send to me, try to keep them 'internet friendly' - 15k max? Mine are about 10-11k right now (so that limits it some!)

I have never seen anything to change the players or logos in an individual forum....Hughs idea although I'm sure he didn't see me think of it (LoL:biggrin:) of having multiple players is a good idea....But I agree pretty much with everything you said Chad....Even the PIG part...LoL:biggrin:

Yeah, the changes have to be made in the 'header' of my custom-made template (it is in the html).

If I can figure out a way, I could rotate this main graphic out on a daily basis (which - if we have some designers who would like to contribute, we could get a few graphics going and everyone could have their day :cool: )

OK, let's see if I can say this right. I believe each forum is completely customizable, but it's some work. A new style set has to be created for each forum, and then each forum has to be reset to that custom style (rather than default). Does that make sense, Chad?

Bill: Yes, just like that. It would be a pain if I didn't have custom coding. It makes it even more of a pain with the custom code. But I may be able to extract a variable from each forum, and define that variable as the name of the image. Therefore it would dynamically change the image depending on the forum you are in.

But I have to think about it.
