Expos Agree to Terms With Barrett
MONTREAL -- Michael Barrett agreed to a $2.6 million contract with the Montreal Expos for next season, avoiding salary arbitration.
Barrett, who made $1.15 million last year, hit .263 with 12 homers and 49 RBI as the Expos starting catcher last season.
For his career, Barrett has a .260 average with 28 homers and 163 RBI in 472 games.
Barrett still could be traded as the Expos try to reduce their payroll to about $40 million for 2003. They traded starter Bartolo Colon to the Chicago White Sox in a three-team deal that brought right-hander Orlando Hernandez to Montreal.
Hernandez, shortstop Orlando Cabrera, and pitchers Joey Eischen, and Javier Vazquez are still eligible for salary arbitration.
