Owners Discuss Minicamp Concerns
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Baseball owners say they are willing to address concerns by players that teams could be pressuring them to attend minicamps prior to spring training.
The voluntary reporting date for spring training is 45 days before Opening Day, and some teams have already started holding some workouts. The union is concerned that because players are contacted directly by teams, their clubs could be coercing them to attend.
"They have to be voluntary. They want to be comfortable with that,'' management lawyer Rob Manfred said. "I'm amenable to that.''
Atlanta, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and the New York Mets are among the teams that have held minicamps or early workouts.
Union lawyer Michael Weiner said the sides had started discussions on a solution.
