McClendon Ejected for Stealing Base


PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon was ejected from Tuesday night's game against Milwaukee for violating one of baseball's cardinal rules -- trying to steal first base.

McClendon, angered when Jason Kendall was called out at first on a grounder into the hole at short in the seventh inning, yanked first base from its moorings and carried it into the dugout in protest.

Rather than tossing the base back onto the field, McClendon calmly set it down in the dugout and handed his lineup card to bench coach Bill Virdon before going down the clubhouse runway to his office.

First base umpire Rick Reed signaled to the ground crew to bring in a different bag so play could continue.

The ejection was the second this season for McClendon, the Pirates' rookie manager.
