Devil Rays Add 2B Anderson, LHP Parris
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed free-agent second baseman Marlon Anderson to a one-year contract and right-hander Steve Parris to a minor league deal.
Anderson signed a $600,000 contract, $200,000 of which is guaranteed. He can earn an additional $200,000 in performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 300, 350, 400 and 500 plate appearances.
Anderson joins the Devil Rays after five years with the Philadelphia Phillies, who chose not to offer him a contract in December.
Anderson batted .258 with 30 doubles, eight home runs and 48 RBI in 145 games last season.
"Marlon is an athletic player with good speed and quickness,'' Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella said. "He will compete at second base during spring training and we will move him around to try to make him more than a one-position player.''
Parris will be invited to the Devil Rays spring training camp after going 5-5 with a 5.97 ERA in 14 games with Toronto last season.
Parris will receive $400,000 if he makes the roster and could earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses. He would receive $25,000 each for making 18 or 20 starts, and $75,000 each for 22, 24, 26, 28, 30 and 32 starts.
If he is not on the major league roster by March 29, he can request to be released.
