Diamondbacks Agree to Deals With Kim, McCracken

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to contracts with reliever Byung-Hyun Kim and outfielder Quinton McCracken.

Kim agreed to a one-year deal worth $3.25 million. McCracken's two-year contract is for $3.5 million split evenly at $1.75 million per year.

The Diamondbacks avoided arbitration by reaching the agreements. The deals leave the team with outfielder David Dellucci as its lone unsigned arbitration-eligible player.

Kim, Arizona's closer, had an 8-3 record with a 2.04 ERA last season. The sidearm right-hander, who turns 24 on Sunday, had a club-record 36 saves in 42 opportunities and was named by Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly to the NL All-Star team.

However, Brenly has said he intends to have right-hander Matt Mantei enter spring training as the closer. Mantei pitched part of last season after undergoing "Tommy John'' elbow surgery in 2000.

Kim wants to be a starter, and will get some chances in that role in spring training.

McCracken made the Diamondbacks as a non-roster invitee to spring training last year. He hit .309 in 123 games, with 23 doubles and a career-high eight triples.
