Expos Exchange Arbitration Figures With Three Players
MONTREAL -- The Montreal Expos exchanged salary arbitration figures with three players Friday after not being able to reach deals with them.
Pitchers Javier Vazquez, Orlando Hernandez and Joey Eischen exchanged numbers with the team, which is trying to get its payroll down to about $40 million for the upcoming season.
Vazquez asked for $7.15 million and the team offered $6 million. Vazquez made $4,775,000 last year when he went 10-13 with a 3.91 ERA. He will be the Expos' ace this season after they traded 20-game winner Bartolo Colon to the Chicago White Sox in a three-way deal earlier this week.
Orlando Hernandez, acquired from the New York Yankees in the Colon deal, asked for $4.5 million with the team offering $4 million.
The Expos will be responsible for only $300,000 of the contract with the Yankees paying $2 million and the White Sox the remainder.
Hernandez, a Cuban nicknamed El Duque, was 8-5 with a 3.64 ERA for the Yankees last season but spent considerable time on the disabled list. He made $3.2 million last season.
