Baseball Setting Up Expos Talks With Other Towns

NEW YORK -- The commissioner's office on Friday started setting up meetings with communities interested in obtaining the Montreal Expos for the 2004 season.

The initial meetings are likely to take place in the last two weeks of January, but no dates have been set. Baseball is expected to send letters to the communities next week with additional details.

Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Portland, Ore., are the primary areas interested in getting the Expos, who were purchased last year by the other 29 teams and are operated by the commissioner's office.

To increase revenue, the team is playing 22 home games this year at San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It's a sad situation. My heartfelt sympathies must go to all Expo fans. It may not seem like much coming from a Yankee fan, but i'm sure that everyone, like myself, is truly disappointed by what is happening in Montreal. Any thoughts about where the franchise might end up? I heard some people mention the possibility of there, once again, being a third team in New York.
